Gantry system to replace toll booths

PETALING JAYA: An end to congestion caused by toll booths? Yes, says Works Minister Datuk Seri S. Samy Vellu. 

Samy Vellu said the government planned to do away with toll booths by the end of next year. However, toll will still be collected.

Toll booths will be replaced by the Multi Lane Free Flow Gantry System. Implementation of the gantry system will begin next March.

Samy Vellu said at a press conference: "The system will help alleviate traffic congestion as it will replace toll booths, which are the main cause of traffic jams in the Klang Valley." 

No toll hike for most major highways

KUALA LUMPUR: The majority of Malaysians will be spared a toll hike next year.  The increasing number of foreign vehicles entering the country through the Johor Causeway has been cited as the reason for the higher toll and motorists have to pay 30 sen more from Jan 1. 

 The cabinet yesterday decided not to increase toll for some of the major highways and the government would fork out RM242 million as compensation to the toll concessionaires.

Highway takeover 'will cost billions'

SEREMBAN: The Government cannot afford to take over the country's tolled highways as the cost can run into billions of ringgit, said Works Minister Datuk Seri S. Samy Vellu. 

Such a move was also not possible as the shares in companies maintaining the highways were not owned by a single entity. 

"This will be a massive burden on the Government. We cannot afford to take over these highways as the cost can run into billions of ringgit,? he told reporters after opening the SJK(T) Ladang Seremban in Sungai Gadut near here. 

PAC saran kerajaan beli saham Plus elak tol naik

Pengerusi Jawatankuasa Kira-Kira Wang Awam (PAC), Datuk Shahrir Abdul Samad menyarankan kerajaan membeli keseluruhan pegangan saham Plus Expressway Berhad (Plus) sebagai langkah mengelakkan kadar kenaikan tol lebuh raya.

Katanya, pembelian saham itu sekaligus menjadikan aset Plus sebagai aset awam yang merupakan langkah terbaik bagi mengelak bebanan kerajaan kemungkinan terus terpaksa membayar pampasan kepada pemegang konsesi tol jika caj tidak dinaikkan serta beban rakyat untuk membayar caj sekiranya tol dinaikkan.

JKR hantar pakar siasat kes bangunan runtuh

GENTING HIGHLANDS :Jabatan Kerja Raya (JKR) akan menghantar pasukan pakar membantu  siasatan kes runtuhan bangunan dua tingkat milik Perbadanan Taman Negeri Perak (PTNP) di tasik Banding, Grik, Perak.

Timbalan Menteri Kerja Raya, Datuk Ir Mohd Zin Mohamad, berkata panel siasatan itu akan menjalankan siasatan  terperinci dan menyeluruh  untuk mengenal pasti punca serta mencari jalan penyelesaian runtuhan pada 13 November lalu.

Syor beli saham Plus bebankan kerajaan

SEREMBAN: Cadangan supaya kerajaan membeli keseluruhan saham pengendali lebuh raya tol terbesar negara, Plus Expressway Berhad (Plus) sebagai langkah menangani kenaikan tol tidak boleh dilakukan kerana ia membabitkan perbelanjaan berbilion ringgit. 

Menteri Kerja Raya, Datuk Seri S Samy Vellu, berkata kementerian tidak mempunyai rancangan membeli saham syarikat itu kerana ia membebankan kewangan kerajaan dan saham Plus sudah dibeli dan dimiliki syarikat swasta lain. 

No signages on highway

THARAN, of  Puchong is unhappy with the management of the North- South  Expressway for not putting up adequate signage along the Rawang ?Tanjung Malim stretch where road.Ugrading work is going on.

"Last week, while driving on the stretch,, I was surprised that there were no signboards to inform motorists that the two lanes were converging into one lane.

"This is dangerous. I hope Plus will do something before an accident happen," he say. 

A SPOKESMAN for Plus Expressways Bhd says there are signboards there informing driver about the lanes.

Kerajaan tidak cadang beli PLUS

KUCHING 26 Nov. - Kerajaan tidak bercadang untuk membeli keseluruhan pegangan saham dalam syarikat konsesi lebuh raya terutama Projek Lebuhraya Utara Selatan (PLUS), kata Menteri Kewangan Kedua, Tan Sri Nor Mohamed Yakcop.

Beliau berkata, pembelian syarikat-syarikat konsesi itu pada masa ini akan mencetuskan pelbagai isu yang membabitkan sektor swasta serta pelabur-pelabur saham.

Tunggu tol baru

PLUS Expressways Bhd (Plus Expressways), pengendali tol Projek Lebuh raya Utara-Selatan Berhad (Plus) yang mencadangkan kenaikan 10 peratus kadar tol bermula 1 Januari tahun depan, masih menunggu keputusan kerajaan mengenai cadangan itu.

Mengikut perjanjian konsesi dengan kerajaan, Plus berhak menaikkan kadar tol 10 peratus untuk setiap tiga tahun bermula Januari 2008 selepas kenaikan kali terakhir tol dilakukan pada 1 Januari 2005.
