ALOR STAR: The Government should consider imposing toll on superbikes and choppers instead of banning them from highways, said Ride for Peace chairman Datuk Shazryl Eskay Abdullah.

He said most of those who own such big motorcycles were professionals who could afford to pay toll.

"This is an option the Government could consider to increase toll revenue," he said, adding that the Government could use part of the revenue to provide better facilities on highways to accommodate superbikes.

Shazryl said this in response to the recent suggestion made by Works Minister Datuk Seri S. Samy Vellu to ban superbikes from highways.

Shazryl said imposing a blanket ban on superbikes would hamper tourism initiatives.

"Our scenic highways are very attractive to foreign superbike riders.

"The road conditions are also good for long-haul travellers," said Shazryl, who promotes tourism through his Ride for Peace initiative.

He has organised Ride for Peace events in conjunction with the recent Haadyai Bike Week and Malaysia Bike Week, attracting thousands of superbikers from around the region.

Shazryl said he plans to hold more Ride for Peace events in future to promote tourism and regional peace.

On superbike riders, he said: "They ride good motorcycles, wear proper safety gear and adhere to traffic rules and regulations."
