Second Penang Bridge plan on despite delay

GEORGE TOWN: The Second Penang Bridge project is on track despite announcements that may have suggested otherwise. Second Finance Minister Tan Sri Nor Mohamed Yakcop said the federal government would proceed with the RM4.3 billion project linking Batu Kawan in Seberang Perai Selatan and Batu Maung on the island.

He said the government had wanted to review the construction cost, design and land acquisition process and not the project itself.

Jambatan Kedua tetap diteruskan

BUTTERWORTH 26 April - Kerajaan tidak pernah berhasrat membatalkan projek pembinaan Jambatan Kedua Pulau Pinang sebaliknya sedang mencari jalan untuk menyelesaikan isu-isu berbangkit mengenai projek tersebut serta cara terbaik mengurangkan kos.

Menteri Kewangan Kedua, Tan Sri Nor Mohamed Yakcop berkata, kenaikan harga simen dan besi yang berlaku seluruh dunia telah menyebabkan kos pembinaan jambatan meningkat daripada RM3.6 bilion kepada RM4.3 bilion.

Bumbung Parlimen dijamin tidak bocor

KUALA LUMPUR 24 April ? Kementerian Kerja Raya memberi jaminan Sidang Dewan Rakyat di Parlimen yang akan bermula Isnin ini akan berjalan dengan lancar tanpa gangguan bumbung bocor seperti yang pernah berlaku sebelum ini.

Menterinya, Datuk Ir. Mohd. Zin Mohamed memberi jaminan itu setelah beliau meneliti dan mendapat maklum balas mengenai persiapan di dalam dan di luar dewan termasuk keberkesanan sistem audio visual.

"Saya sudah mendapat laporan teknikal dan sudah menelitinya. Setakat ini, saya berpuas hati dengan laporan yang diberikan.

The saga continues

IN a new development to the Bandar Mahkota Cheras access road issue, Cheras-Kajang Highway concessionaire Grand Saga Sdn Bhd has issued a warning letter to the company that owns the heavy machinery used in dismantling the barricade.

Residents of the township brought down the barricade blocking their toll-free access to the highway on Monday after mounting frustration against Grand Saga for closing the road in 2005.

The highway concessionaire issued the letter to Wing Sing Tractor Work through a legal firm based in Kuala Lumpur.

Architects to set up special centre to identify defects in buildings

PETALING JAYA: The construction industry will soon have its first standard system of inspection of new and existing buildings, once the Architect Centre Sdn Bhd is launched on May 8.

The Malaysian Institute of Architects (PAM) said the standard would be especially useful in relation to discovery of visible defects, appraisal of quality of workmanship and the dissemination of advice to rectify such defects.

Kerja baik pulih Parlimen Jun

KUALA LUMPUR: Kerja membaik pulih secara besar-besaran dan komprehensif ke atas Bangunan Parlimen yang sudah berusia 45 tahun dijangka bermula Jun ini berikutan kerja membaiki kebocoran bumbung sudah selesai sepenuhnya, kata Menteri Kerja Raya, Datuk Mohd Zin Mohamed. 

Beliau berkata, tempoh kira-kira tiga minggu sewaktu rehat persidangan Dewan Rakyat pada bulan berkenaan adalah sesuai untuk merangka dan memulakan kerja membaik pulih keseluruhan bangunan termasuk di blok menara. 

RM41.5m upgrade for 40 Tamil schools

KUALA LUMPUR: Tenders to refurbish or upgrade 40 Tamil schools will be issued by the Works Ministry next month.

Works Minister Datuk Mohd Zin Mohamed said work on the projects, worth RM41.5mil in total, would start in July.

The allocation for the projects is from the Finance Ministry (RM30mil) and Education Ministry (RM11.4mil).

Mohd Zin said 25 of the projects would be distributed to Class D contractors, 10 to Class F contractors, three to Class E and one each for Class B and C contractors.

Keputusan bijak kaji balik RMK-9

KUALA TERENGGANU 23 April - Keputusan kerajaan untuk mengkaji semula pelaksanaan projek di bawah Rancangan Malaysia Kesembilan (RMK-9) khususnya yang bertaraf mega adalah langkah proaktif bagi mengelakkan negara menanggung beban kewangan yang lebih parah.

Presiden Kesatuan Kontraktor Melayu Malaysia, Senator Datuk Roslan Awang Chik berkata, langkah tersebut amat bijak kerana sekiranya diteruskan kesannya bukan sahaja dihadapi negara malah turut menjejaskan kehidupan rakyat.

RM 41.5m to fix Tamil schools

FORTY Tamil schools will be renovated and upgraded at a cost of RM 41.5 million.

Work Minister Datuk Mohd Zin Mohamed said RM30 milion will be allocated by the Finance Ministry while RM11.5   million will be from the Education Ministry.

"Work will begin in July,"he said after chairing the ministry's post-Cabinet meeting in Kuala Lumpur yesterday.

 

All systems go at Parliament

KUALA LUMPUR: Parliament House is all set for the coming sitting where some 222 MPs will be sworn in.

For the past few days, Works Minister Datuk Mohd Zin Mohamed and Information Minister Datuk Ahmad Shabery Cheek have been inspecting the facilities to ensure that everything is in order.

Mohd Zin visited the ministers' new cubicles and media centre and the rooftop area which had been repaired following leaks.
