I REFER to "Samy: Motorcyclists may be banned from expressways" (The Star Online, Oct 1).

We are still reeling from the Auditor-General's report showcasing inappropriate spending of public funds, and now we have the Works Minister himself announcing the building of 16 watchtowers for the Police at a cost of RM1mil (which amounts to RM62,500 each).

I think even a low- to medium-cost landed house with all the amenities would cost less, depending on where it is situated. I would also imagine that the observation towers are on government reserve land located in out of town areas.

Can an appropriate agency (not JKR of course) please investigate the cost?

Perhaps it can also come up with a breakdown of the cost of maintenance (its nature and for how long and how often) for the information of the public. The Works Minister also said that motorists must make sure they slow down at least 3km to 4km near the towers. Aren't we are supposed to drive at the required speed at all times and not out of fear of the observation towers?
