BOTA: Superbikers will be banned from the North-South Expressway (NSE) if they break traffic laws and disrupt the flow of traffic.

"They go as fast as 170km per hour on the NSE and sometimes ride four abreast, two on each lane. They must follow the rules and regulations. I want to meet with the associations. If they (don't listen) I will impose a ban on them,? Works Minister Datuk Seri S. Samy Vellu said after visiting the almost completed Ipoh-Lumut expressway yesterday.

He said the NSE was not a place for superbikers to race with one another.

"They must remember that motorists are paying toll to use the expressway while they are using it for free," an irate Samy Vellu said.

He also said that the total cost of the construction of 16 police watch towers nationwide was RM1.6 million and not RM1 million as reported earlier.

"The Public Works Department was only allocated RM1 million, and the total cost including the construction of access roads, piling works and guardrails was RM1.6 million."

He also said his ministry would ask the cabinet for an additional RM100 million for the soon-to-be completed Federal Route 5, better known as the Ipoh Lumut expressway.

The money will be used for the construction of flyovers, traffic lights and street lights along the 48km stretch from Sitiawan to Siputeh.

"We have received a lot of requests for these things but we cannot spend one sen more than the agreed RM175 million for the whole project.

"I plan to submit a detailed report to the cabinet. It costs RM17.5 million just to build one flyover," he said.
