THE downpour on Tuesday evening resulted in floods at several areas in the Klang Valley. The Smart Tunnel was temporarily closed to be on standby.

Kampung Paka in the Sungei Besi area was perhaps the worst hit, with floodwaters reaching 1.22m. It was the third time flash flood hit the area within four days. The first two incidents, which were less serious, occurred last Saturday and Sunday.

Seputeh MP Teresa Kok, who visited the site, said the settlement was located on a low-lying land and water could not be channelled out due to the construction of the KL-Putrajaya Expressway around the area.

According to Teresa, she has contacted the contractor requesting it to deepen the drainage, and the company has agreed to look into the matter.

There are about 10 families still staying in the squatter settlement.

The Salak South Market was hit with a minor flood, with waters reaching 0.6m.

Meanwhile, the retaining wall along Jalan 1, Taman Minang collapsed. The fallen stretch measured 4.6m high and 27.5m long.

The cave-in affected two rows of houses with some showing fine-line cracks on the walls. It also damaged two cars and a lamppost at the nearby Tun Perak flat car park.

Balakong assemblyman Datuk Hoh Hee Lee, who went with Kajang Municipal Council (MPKj) officers to check on the site, said the council would need about RM250,000 to repair the damaged retaining wall.

A Kuala Lumpur City Hall (DBKL) mobile unit officer said that minor flooding occurred at the low-lying stretch of Jalan Chan Sow Lin and Jalan Sungai Besi near the Old Airport, causing a minor road congestion.

The downpour also caused three stretches of a drain in Puchong Utama to cave in.

According to residents, the drain had already shown signs of collapsing since last Friday.

The residents want the authorities to repair the damage as soon as possible to ease traffic on the two roads next to the drain.
