KUALA LUMPUR: The Penang Bridge does not have any serious cracks that will endanger motorists, Works Minister Datuk Seri S. Samy Vellu said yesterday.

"The structure of the bridge is solid and motorists can safely use the bridge anytime."

Samy Vellu said the engineering consultant appointed to inspect the bridge had established that the strength of the structure was good.

He was responding to allegations raised by Sungai Dua assemblyman Jasmin Mohamad in the Penang state assembly on Tuesday that there were serious cracks in the Penang Bridge.

The minister said bridge operator Penang Bridge Sdn Bhd made routine checks to ensure the bridge structure was safe.

He said piling works currently being carried out to widen the bridge were being done cautiously so as to ensure all specifications were met and the safety of the bridge was not compromised.
