New road to Fraser's closed by landslide

For the time being, the old regulated gate system, which carries out ascents and descents for visitors to Fraser's Hill via timed intervals, will be in effect.

The RM50 million road, linking the Gap to the hill resort, has been rendered unpassable since last December following a massive landslide.

The road, completed in 2001, is used by motorists when heading up to Fraser's Hill while the old road is used when coming down.

Authorities anticipate the road would be re-opened in six months to a year's time.

Dr Ng : Road riddled with problems

Raub member of Parliamen Datuk Dr Ng Yen Yen appeared guarded when asked to comment about the closure of  the new road from the Gap to Fraser's Hill.

She did stress that the matter was "complicated, as one would have to consider the whole stretch of road and not just the area affected by the landslide.

"In early 2000, we requested the Federal Government to built a new road.

"The road was built to enhance the image of  Fraser's Hill. Since then, the road has been plagued by many technical problems," she said.

Bridge work can resume

GEORGE TOWN: With the lifting of a stop-work order yesterday, the sea dredging for the second Penang Bridge can resume.

State Tourism Development and Environment Committee chairman Teng Chang Yeow said UEM Builders Bhd and its contractors had complied with the Department of Environment's requirements.

The DOE had issued the order in December because they had failed to install a General Packet Radio Service (GPRS) system on their barges so their movements could be tracked via satellite.
