Contractor questioned over roof collapse

KUALA  TERENGGANU- The State Public  Works Department is investigating how the roof of a mosque collapsed in Chukai on Saturday morning.

PWD Kemaman engineer Mohd Rosli Daud said they had met the mosque’s contractor, Syarikat Tegak Wibawa Sdn Bhd.

“We began investigations following Menteri Besar Datuk Ahmad Said’s request for one,” he told the New Straits Times.

In the incident, a large part of the RM 2.1 million mosque roof caved in about 9 am, almost there months after a similar fate befell the Sultan Mizan Zainal Abidin Stadium roof in Kuala Terengganu.

An Indonesia labourer was warded at Dungun Hospital for severe injuries, while two of this colleagues escaped with light injuries.

Fortunately no one else was hurt as an akad nikah (marriage solemnization) was supposed to be held there around 11 am.

The mosque in Kampung Batu Putih, which can accommodate 500 worshipers, was completed in November last year.

However, there months ago a leak in the roof  and cracks in the ceiling were discovered.
