The present traffic congestion in Jalan Blakong, Selangor, is due to decrease when an access road cutting through the Cheras Perdana and Damai Perdana housing areas opens next month.

In addition, the road linking to the SLIK and Balakong highways is expected to cut travel time for 10,000 motorists.  It is currently being used by motorcyclist and pedestrians.

Balakong assemblyman Yap Lum Chin,, who held a press conference at the site last Friday, said residents in Bandar Tun Hussein Onn, Cheras Perdana, Damai Perdana and Desa Baiduri had wanted the road opened since 2001.

"It was one of my promises to them if won the Balakong seat.  I am glad that the parties involved in the matter have agreed to the opening," he added.

Kajang Municipal councilor Lee Ah Seng Said the road was previously used as an illegal dumping site and that it cost the council RM10,000 to clear the rubbish each time.

"For public convenience, it was proposed that the developer for the area, Uda Land, upgrade the road before handing it over to the council for maintenance," he said.

Councilor Razaly Hassan said traffic lights would be installed if the cross-section was heavily used and that the illegal dumping activities would be curbed.

Lee said UDA would be asked to landscape the road shoulders and install streetlights as pre-requisites from the council before the handover.

The total cost is estimated at RM100,000 and will be borne entirely by the developer.
