New scheme for toll pacts in the offing | Kementerian Kerja Raya Langkau ke kandungan utama

KUALA LUMPUR: The Government is formulating a new scheme for future toll concessions, Works Minister Datuk Seri S. Samy Vellu said.

He said the scheme would provide equal benefits to consumers, concession companies, financiers and the Government.

"The new scheme, which is being worked out, will further enhance the country's privatisation policy," he said in Paris yesterday, where he was leading a 16-member delegation to the five-day World Road Congress.

Samy Vellu said a survey to obtain public opinion prior to privatisation of expressways, identify needs based on demand, strengthen terms, and on the effect on traffic and conditions of the concession agreement were also taken into consideration for future toll concessions.

"Even though expressways are privatised, the Government has taken the necessary action to reduce social implications by providing alternative routes and subsidising the toll levied on expressways," he said.

Samy Vellu said that in two years' time, Malaysia would have 2,000km of completed tolled roads.
