SEPANG: Highway concession holders must ensure that no illegal hawkers or traders operate at their rest and service stops, Works Minister Datuk Seri Mohd Zin Mohamed said.

Illegal traders were a breach of safety and could contribute to other social ills at such stops, he added.

"I would like to remind the concessionaires to make sure that there are no illegal traders along the highway," he said after launching PLUS' renovated Dengkil R&R stop.

He said the Malaysian Highway Authority had also been told to ensure that concession holders were serious about stopping illegal traders from operating from makeshift stalls or at allocated booths.

He urged the public to direct information on illegal vendors and traders to the concessionaires or the authority.

He said only stall owners approved by the concessionaires could operate from the booths.

"If we find out the operator is not the licence holder, the licence will be terminated and given to the next deserving operator," he said, adding preference would be given to local residents in the vicinity of the R&R stops.
