TAMPIN: The much anticipated gantry toll collection system to help ease traffic congestion is expected to take effect next year.
Works Minister Datuk Shaziman Abu Mansor said the study on the system was still ongoing and would be completed by end of the year before being presented to the cabinet.

"The current toll booth system is old and not suitable and needs to be updated in order to alleviate traffic congestion in the city and at toll booths.

"With the new system, motorists no longer need to stop or slow down at toll gates in the future, like how it has been successfully implemented in countries like Europe, Australia, Hong Kong and even Singapore," he said after opening Surau Al Jannah at Taman Gunung Mas, here, yesterday.

Currently, tests on the system is being carried out at the Batu Tiga toll in Shah Alam, Selangor.
In 2007, then Works Minister Datuk Seri S. Samy Vellu announced that the gantry toll collection system, known as the multi-lane free flow gantry system, was supposed to be introduced in the Klang Valley in March, last year, and then in other parts of the country in stages.

Under the system, the start and end of the journey will be electronically recorded when a motorist passes under a gantry. The toll fee will be automatically deducted via a prepaid card installed in the vehicle.

Shaziman also said the proposal to move the Seremban/Labu toll to a different location due to traffic congestion would be reviewed under the Tenth Malaysia Plan.
