JELI: Thai Prime Minister Sura-yud Chulanont said the new bridge across Sungai Golok linking Ban Buketa in Narathiwat and Bukit Bunga here symbolises 50 years of friendship between Thailand and Malaysia.

"We can aptly call it a 'Friendship Bridge' in conjunction with our 50th year of friendship.

"I believe the bridge will further strengthen our friendship and enhance co-operation.

"It is an important link that will spur economic growth in Narathiwat and Kelantan," he said at the joint opening of the bridge with Prime Minister Datuk Seri Abdullah Ahmad Badawi yesterday.

Surayud expects communication between the people of the two countries to grow, and also expects an increase in the socio-economic activities in border towns.

"It is a historic day. I am sure trade and investment will grow and benefit the people."

The cost of construction is estimated at RM9.2 million, with both countries agreeing to share the expense equally.

He also said that the bridge was completed this year to mark the 50th anniversary of the establishment of Thai-Malaysian relations.

The bridge is built to facilitate the transportation of goods and travel between the two countries.

Surayud's speech at the ceremony was televised live by Thailand's Channel 11 station, while Abdullah's speech was aired live over Radio Televisyen Malaysia.

Both premiers later signed a plaque to commemorate the occasion at the middle of the bridge to mark its opening.

The event was also witnessed by thousands of villagers from both sides.
